Top 5 Home Design Trends for 2022

2022 is here, and with a new year comes new possibilities. Interior design is no exception. Whether you’re ready for a home makeover, or just a little refresh, it can be fun to look to design trends for inspiration. Here we’ll look at 5 top home design trends for 2022 to experiment with, why they’re popular, and how to use them in your own home!

COLOR

Bold, warm, gradient—however you use it, color is making a huge comeback this year. After spending so much time in our houses the last couple of years, a sterile or cold looking aesthetic just isn’t going to cut it. Let color be a means of self expression, no matter what you want to inject into your environment. For more playfulness, yellow or orange. More coziness? Brown is coming back in a major way. Perhaps you’ll play with Pantone’s color of the year, Veri Peri

This doesn’t mean you have to re-paint your walls or run out and buy a blue velvet couch. Adding in color through accents is a great start. You might try some colorful pillows, a throw, or artwork for a pop of color in your home.

PLAYING WITH SHAPES

Gone are the days of boxy, stiff angles in the house. One trend that’s been on the rise is more whimsical and rounded shapes in interior design. Curved lines are said to be more inviting and friendly on a subconscious level. You could try using two or three smaller, wavy mirrors in your bathroom rather than one long traditional mirror.

Another way to incorporate new shapes is substituting a blocky sofa or rectangular coffee table for a sofa or table with rounded edges.

1970s INSPIRED

You’re probably seeing it everywhere – curtain bangs, flared pants, and velvet – yes, the ’70s are back! This retro trend has made its way to interior design on a large scale. Some prominent 1970s staples you’ll see in design this year are leather, the color brown, and modular furniture, to name a few.

Leather couches and armchairs are a great staple for incorporating the 1970s into your room, plus they will look great for years to come, no matter what trends come and go. For brown colors, don’t feel restricted to just brown—the spectrum of color anywhere from camel to cognac to deep brown is very in right now. Play around with these colors and shapes, and your place will soon be off the hook.

NATURE INSPIRED

Even though the world has opened up more, people still want to find a way to let the outside in. With some still working from home, and a general feeling of restlessness lingering, we need our interiors to feel as freeing and relaxed as possible. Bringing literal life into your house is a great way to do so. Biophilic design is the concept of connecting the manmade and natural world, through plants, light, images, shapes, and more.

Biophilic design won’t just look better – it will make you feel better too. The incorporation of the natural world is great for physical and mental health, and has even been found to lower stress. Try adding a plant or two—even if you have to start out with fake ones, that’s OK! Wood and other natural materials are another way to give your home a more earthy feel.

MAXIMALISM

While the last few years focused on minimalism and all-white everything, design trends are now leaning more towards the opposite end of that spectrum with maximalism. Maximalism is all about being bold and being less limited by rules or regulations. Mixing and matching patterns, shapes, and even design styles is all part of the fun of maximalism.

To start experimenting with maximalism, start adding more personal flair to your space. For example, showcasing a collection of items you love, or tall bookshelves stacked with books and trinkets. Maximalism involves a lot of layering, so find where you want to start and build from there.

Trends come and go, but the important part is making sure your home still feels like you. Using design styles and trends as inspiration and finding out what you like will almost certainly be the best way to decorate your home.
